According to the 2016 National Health and Nutrition Survey, an estimated 10 million people in Japan have diabetes, and another 10 million are pre-diabetic (strongly suspected of having diabetes). This means that one in six adults has diabetes or is pre-diabetic. The 2018 National Health and Nutrition Survey showed that the proportion of people with diabetes was 18.7% for men and 9.3% for women, with the prevalence increasing with age for both genders.
Furthermore, the three major complications of diabetes can severely impair daily life.
・Diabetic retinopathy: Can lead to blindness.
・Diabetic nephropathy: Requires dialysis.
・Diabetic neuropathy: Damages peripheral nerves that control sensation in the hands and feet, sometimes necessitating amputation of limbs.
Diabetes can be prevented by reviewing daily diet and exercise habits.
